It has been a while, which means it’s a bumper edition of my food news roundup this week. I have loads of new products and news to tell you about. As a bonus, I have 3 competitions that I’ll be running over the next fortnight so be sure to check back in regularly!
Based upon the South African snack of “billtong”, Script Snacks takes the best of Irish beef, slices then air dries it. Each package contains 16.1g protein, 73.5 calories, and they keep for up to 24 hours in the fridge once opened. At a recommended retail price of €2.95 they’re not cheap but considering the protein content this snack will certainly be popular amongst the gym crowd. I tried two flavours, courtesy of Script Snacks. I found that the chilli flavour was slightly overpowering but the garlic and black pepper version was outstanding. Irish Wallaby Meat For Sale
Yes, you did read that correctly! M&K meats have entered into a 10 year agreement with the Lambay Estate Company to sell the meat produced on Lambay Island exclusively. I don’t live too far from Lambay and the presence of wallabies on the island is no secret to locals. M&K will be selling Lambay beef, lamb, game (including venison and rabbit) and wallaby exclusively from The Market Butchers in Whitewater Shopping Centre, Newbridge, Co Kildare and Park Shopping Centre, Prussia St, Dublin 7, or wholesale from M&K Meats, Greenogue Business Centre, Rathcoole, Co Dublin. I admit to being more than a little bit disappointed that I won’t be able to buy the meat locally. If this changes I’ll be sure to let you know. I know I’ve mentioned this crowd before in a newsletter. This is a group of milkmen attached to Avonmore and I believe that the milkman is a vital part of the community. Luckily enough, after a little prodding in the locality, we now have North County Dublin covered when it comes to a delivery service online so if you live nearby it might be worth checking it out! http://www.mymilkman.ie/
Lidl Christmas Markets
After a recent visit to a temporary Christmas wonderland in the Smock Alley Theatre, I can tell you that Lidl love Christmas, just a little bit! They’ve been in touch to tell me that they are hosting a number of Christmas markets nationwide this year, with all proceeds going directly to their charity partner, Barretstown. The markets will take place in Galway, Dublin, Limerick and Belfast and admission is free. From traditional stalls offering the best of Lidl’s mouth-watering, seasonal food and drink, to ‘Santa Land’ and a Christmas carousel sure to delight both young and old alike, there’s something for the whole family to enjoy at the Lidl markets this Christmas. The markets will kick off in Eyre Square, Galway (21st – 24th November), followed by CHQ, Dublin (27th – 30th November), the Hunt Museum in Limerick (4th – 7th December) and St. Anne’s Square, Belfast (11th – 14th December). Glenisk Recipe Videos in Association with Forkful
My friend Aoife McElwain and the team at Forkful have joined up with Glenisk to produce some beautiful short video recipes using the Glenisk range. I received a gift of the delicious orange and cardamom granola to celebrate their collaboration. It’s all gone so I’ve since made another batch!
The team at Green Saffron have been in touch to tell me about two new products they’ve just added to their range. They are an aged basmati rice which is so healthy it is nearly on the same GI range as brown rice, and a mango chutney. I do so love the Green Saffron spice blends and sauces. They are a little expensive when you’re on a budget but there is nothing comparable when it comes to flavour. A little goes a long way.
