Hungry Bird

My mother-in-law often calls the toddler the “hungry bird” as he will keep on looking for food even when he’s full. Another way of describing it is that your “eyes are bigger than your belly” which is a common affliction in our household. At least I have a way of using up leftovers.

On Friday I made myself an egg on toast for my lunch. I assumed that because the toddler had already eaten about 30 minutes beforehand I’d be safe enough to eat my lunch in peace. Oh no, the hungry bird struck again. I ate toast for lunch, simply because it was too much effort to cook another egg after I’d sat down to enjoy a few minutes of a meal with a hot cup of tea.

That evening I made a cup of hot chocolate for myself then walked into the living room to check on something for less than half a minute. In which time the teenager decided she liked the look of it.

Yesterday it was the turn of my pork chop on the dinner plate which made its way into the 5 year old, and this morning my toast was eaten by the toddler even though he had his own piece in a vicegrip.

Is this a conspiracy? Always.

Are the children trying to get me to lose weight? Probably.

Does all food taste far better when it’s off my plate? Probably.

I found myself this morning giving out loudly about everybody “stealing the bit outta my mouth” and realised I’m possibly following in my mother’s footsteps.

Maybe I just have to accept that in order to eat a meal without having my food swiped I need to eat standing up at the counter.

I'm an Irish mother to 2 boys, born & bred in Dublin, Ireland. I like to cook simple & fresh food for the family, with the family on a budget.
